9-inch Comtoise clock with verge escapement and folded pendulum from 1858. Strikes the half and full hour (with rack striking) on a bell, with repetition of the hour strike, and alarm mechanism. A single-piece embossed decorative plate with a romantic motif: a young man placing a ring on his beloved’s finger. Iron hands adorned with applied rosettes embossed from brass. Enamel dial signed: Gilbert à Moulins.
Engraved on the backplate: "L Greif Moulins le 14 Janvier 1858" and "L Grexx le 16 Avril 1862." The merchant’s signature, "L(aurent) Greif à Moulins," is often found on Comtoise clocks. Gilbert was likely the purchaser or owner of the clock.
