Nr. 168 CUM

10-inch Comtoise clock with folded pendulum and spindle escapement from around 1840/45. Spindle escapement with folded pendulum, half-hour and full-hour strike on bell with repetition, alarm mechanism. Two-piece decorative metal with the popular sun head/ram's horn motif of the time. The large strike mechanism lever system does not work with spring pressure, as was commonly used at the time, but already uses a design that functions with weight (see detail photos). The enamel dial with polychrome enamel painting, which fills the entire center of the dial, is signed: Mayet frères à Morez. The Mayet brothers, descendants of the Mayet family who, according to legend, brought clockmaking to Morbier in the Jura mountains in the 17th century, were still active in the craft in the mid-19th century. On this dial, for example, at III (see detail photo), you can clearly see that first all the lines for the minuterie, name, and various colors of the painting were applied. Then the 'black' bars were painted, and finally, the dial was fired in the kiln. Since two enamel colors had been painted over each other, the colors mixed a little during the decorative firing, resulting in slightly blurred edges.
