Nr. 134 CUM

9-inch Comtoise clock from 1870/80, verge escapement with folded pendulum, half-hour and full-hour strike on a bell with repetition. Brass decorative plate with an iconographic depiction of the Republic.
The gravestone shows the date February 24, 1848, as on this day, the kingdom of the Citizen King Louis Philippe was buried when the people stormed the Tuileries. On February 25, the Second Republic was proclaimed, represented by a female figure with a radiant head, holding a sword and the Tricolore (the flag of the République Française) in her hands before the tablet of law. With her left foot, she crushes the royal crown into the dust.
The supporting pillars of the Republic are art and science (bust, violin, globe) on one side and agriculture (plow and ears of corn) on the other. The Republic secures (cannon) the freedom, equality, and brotherhood of its citizens and aspires for them to live in peace (olive branch) and find happiness (flowers).
Two pillars symbolize the unity of the state, which carries liberty (Phrygian cap). On one pillar, "NION FA" is visible, part of the motto "L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE" ("Unity Brings Strength"), while on the other pillar, "REPUBL..IQUE FRANCAISE" is inscribed.
A similar decorative plate exists with the date 4 SBRE 1870 (September 4, 1870) on the altar. On this day, the empire of Napoleon III was buried (Napoleon III was captured by the Germans), and the Third Republic was proclaimed.
