Depiction of a popular children's or family game, known in Germany as "Schinkenklopfen," in France as "la main gauche" (the left hand) or "la main chaude" (the hot hand). The father places his head under his wife's apron so he cannot see which of his children will slap him on the bottom. The boy has raised his left hand for the strike, and the father tries to soften the blow by stretching his left hand backward.
Pinwheel escapement (amant), folded pendulum, half-hour and full-hour strike on a bell with repetition.
