Nr. 140 CUM
9-inch CUM Comtoise clock with verge escapement and folded pendulum from around 1847/1848. Half-hour and full-hour strike on a bell with repetition.
One-piece pressed decorative plate with a romantic motif, marked: DÉPOSÉ SGDG - SANS GARANTIE DU GOUVERNEMENT BREVETE. The production of this one-piece decorative plate was patent-protected, which only made sense during the term of the patent. The patent was granted in 1843 to Reydol in Paris for a duration of 5 years, i.e., until 1848. During the validity of this patent, the patent holder or a licensee would have marked their decorative plates accordingly, while other manufacturers continued to produce two-piece decorative plates. The oldest decorative plate known to me, with a date marked on its associated dial, is from 1846. During the period between 1843 and 1848, there were already models that were produced both in one-piece and two-piece formats. After 1848, models that had previously existed in two-piece versions were, of course, also produced in one-piece versions. The model presented here can therefore be dated to the period before 1848, even without a definite date marked on the dial.
